Career Guidance, Georgia Career Clusters & Career Pathways Q & A
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Career Guidance is an integral part of the Fulton County School System’s Guidance and Counseling Program. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that our local school Guidance and Counseling Departments will provide the following Career Guidance to your student this school year using Georgia Career Information System (GCIS). Please see specific grade level career guidance below:

6th Graders will create a Georgia Career Information System account (September 2013)*

6th Graders will take the Career Cluster Inventory, respond to the questions, and save their results (September 2013)*

7th Graders will take the Reality Check Assessment, respond to the questions, and save their results (October 2013)*

7th Graders will explore 3 career clusters and add to their GCIS portfolios (October 2013)*

8th Graders will explore 3 occupations and save the information in their GCIS portfolios (November 2013)*

8th Graders will complete an Individual Graduation Plan. A Parent/Guardian will sign the Individual Graduation Plan, indicating that they have reviewed and approved the plan (January – April 2014)*

9th Graders will explore and investigate 3 additional occupations and save the information in their GCIS portfolios (September 2013)*

9th Graders will review/adjust or create an Individual Graduation Plan (October 2013 – April 2014)*

Career Pathways Q & A
1. What are Georgia Career Clusters & Career Pathways?
Career Pathways are a group of careers which guide students to investigate careers by interest and to design their courses of study in order to advance their career goals. Students select their pathway based on what they want to do after graduation and take a core set of classes coupled with electives based on their chosen career path.
2. When and how will my student select a Career Cluster & Career Pathway?
During the fall 2013 semester, all 9th grade students will select a Career Cluster & Career Pathway during their initial Career Guidance Lesson. Beginning in spring 2014, all 8th grade students will select a Career Cluster & Career Pathway during their Career Guidance Lesson and on their Individual Graduation Plan.
3. What is the process for students who wish to change their Career Cluster & Career Pathway?
All high school students will have an opportunity to change their Career Cluster & Career Pathway selection during Career Guidance Lessons.
4. If a student changes their Career Cluster & Career Pathway, will it impact their ability to graduate on time?
No. Career Cluster & Career Pathway selection and completion will not impact on-time graduation as all courses required for graduation will be scheduled first.
5. How do I access my students Career Cluster & Career Pathway?
Students will select and save their Career Cluster & Career Pathway selection in their Georgia Career Information System, Career Portfolio. Parents/Guardians may use the following hyper-link instructions to view their student’s Career Cluster & Career Pathway selection:
